Competitors of .Net

HI All,

As we all know, Microsoft is the market leader in the IT Industry. If we were to identify the competitiors for .Net, who could be the competitors ?

Regards
Sheetal

Well, it's *a* market leader. The IT industry is too big to really
claim to have a single leader - there are too many aspects to it.

The main competitors for mindshare as far as I can see are:

o Java
o Unmanaged C/C++
o VB prior to VB.NET

Do you mean in progress, than I can share your opinion, however as far as I
know, has IBM still a big share in the total marketplace. And there are
places in the IT industry where Microsoft is really nothing. (Processors,
All kind of Chips, Mainframes, a lot of other hardware, DVD, CD, tapes,
paper, .......................)

I would add Smalltalk not as a today's competitor but tomorrows. Alan Kay
the inventor of Smalltalk won recently the Turing award and Smalltalk is in
the press again.
In the last days there appeared two new implementations ( in beta ) an
interpreter for .NET and a dialect running with native widgets under Mac OS
X. Smalltalk has advantages for the developer ( see
http://smalltalk-programming.com ) . I wouldn't claim that competitors must
be really as big as MS for tomorrows' competition. Cncom & IBM Smalltalks
are today's mainstream Smalltalk environments.
