File signing??

Hi,
not too sure if signing is the correct term but I want to extract a
signature from a file that will allow me to virify that the file
hasn't changed.

something that will allow me to do the following:

generate and store the signature

after a while

compare file and signature to determin if file has been edited
Cheers
