MachineName property of the performance counter issue

Hi,
I'm playing windows service using vb.net. I added a performance counter to my windows service, but I couldn't set MachineName property of the performance counter to blank. After I set it to empty, whenever the focus leave it, pop up error message.
In Chapter 2 lesson 3 of Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft Visual Basic.NET and Microsoft VIsual C#.net book, there is a note saying "By default the designer also adds the MachineName property, which specifies the machine name where the counter is installed. To make the installation of the performance counter machine-independent, you can set the MachineName property of the performance counter to blank in the Properties window. When you set the MachineName property of the performance counter to blank, the designer does not add the code to set the MachineName property".
Any idea?
