legacy system is

A legacy system is generally any system which is considered pretty old
by software development standards and probably in need of
replacement. It varies a bit depending on where you are. In some
industries a legacy system can be a Corba Application that was made
in the 90's. In my telecommunications background Legacy systems are
much older, often back to 60's 70's, etc.

Often times folks mean big, old, Mainframe applications.
