Unique Identifiers

For globally unique id's, ones that will have to be handled manully in
config files, what does everyone prefer:
1) A Guid.
2) A case-insenstive string based hierarchal namespace string, providing
guidelines for uniquity.
3) Some other system.

I usually lean towards Guids internally, they are simpler to use as a whole,
but in this case I will have to provide Id to factory mappings, most likely
in a serialized format like an xml document or other file that a human may
edit. This makes me lean towards a string based system because it not only
is easier for people to deal with without making a mistake, it is far less
cryptic and it is far easier to figure out what /My/whatever/control/thing
is than {C6322621-926E-4cc8-8DB0-6E8BF57FCEEE}. I have considered Guid &
descriptions, but that always leaves the possibility someone will change the
Guid and not the description.
