General Application Development

Hi

Forgive me if this is not the correct place to post this type of question. Its the only place I could find that is general enough

I'm a developer for a good sized company. We have MANY applications to maintain. Internet, Extranet, Intranet...all with multiple web sites, mutiple databases, etc. In addition to the web platform we also have windows applications to maintain. Some of which have many servers involved, many databases involved, etc

We are trying to organize it where anyone could easily develop for any of the said applications. The problem is right now there is no where to go in order to find out what database holds the data for a particular app, or what logins are used for the database connection, what development environment is required to have, etc.

Does anyone know of some sort of application that is designed to help in this regard? We prefer a Microsoft product as we are a Microsoft development shop. However, if Microsoft doesn't have something of this nature, is there something else out there
