VS.net and VSS

RMG
I use VS.net 2003 and VSS 6a.

Whilst working on the network the integration between
VS.net and VSS works perfectly. But when I open a project
whilst disconnected from the network I get some problems.

When I open a solution VS.net tells me it can't find the
VSS database and gives me an option to "work
disconnected". If I select this option VS.net gives me a
msgbox titled "Microsoft Development Environment" with the
message "The operation could not be completed" and an OK
button.

After acknowledging the message I can continue editing my
project but VS.net does not do any VSS checkouts and, for
some files, I have to manually remove the readonly flag
before making any changes or, in some cases, before saving
any changes. Once I'm back on the network I can do a "get
latest versions" and VS.net will successfully notice that
some files have changed and give me the option to leave or
overwrite the changes.

Is there a way to further debug this error? Are there any
known conditions that cause this error? What else can I do
to fix this problem? Heeeeelp!

This is normal with a networked machine that is disconnected. It is to
safeguard your files. You can get around this by deleting the VSS files and
unmarking "Read Only" on the files. Realize that you are now a cowboy and
can get yourself into trouble.

Another option is to create an "offline" copy that you edit offline. When
you are reconnected, check out the files you changed in the online copy and
copy from the offline copy to the online copy. You can then check in the
changed files. Yes, a bit of a pain, but safer than editing offline overall.

I would also consider a newer VSS build, as the 6.0d build works better with
2003.

Humm... except my colleague's laptop behaves differently.
When he selects the aformentioned "work disconnected"
button he does NOT get the operation failed message and he
then works at home fine. For him VS.net does
a "disconnected checkout" when he edits a file whilst
offline and then, when he returns to the office, he
selects the Change Source Safe menu option, reconnects to
the database, and has his changes automatically checked
back in.

Hi RMG,

Thank you for using MSDN Newsgroup! My name is Kevin, and I will be
assisting you on this issue.

First of all, I would like to confirm my understanding of your issue. From
your description, I understand that when you're working disconnected from
the network, a dialog box which says "The operation could not be completed"
will be shown. And the files will not be checked out when you want to
modify them. If there's any misunderstanding, please let me know.

Based on my knowledge, this problem might be caused by incorrect setting of
the source safe control in VS .net. Please try the following for
troubleshooting:

1. Open the Project and click OK to pass the error message.
2. Select File/Source Control/Change Source Control... from the menu to
open the Change Source Control dialog box.
3. Click "Disconnect" button is the project is currently shown as
"Connected".
4. If the above still doesn't work, select Tools/Options to open the Option
dialog box. Navigate to Source Control/General in the left tree view.
5. Please try to check if there's any difference between the settings with
your machine and your colleague's machine. Or you can simply set "Use
Visual Sourcesafe settings" from the combobox.

Hope this helps. If the problem still exists after finishing these steps,
please feel free to let me know. I'm standing by to be of assistance.

If anything is unclear, please feel free to reply to the post.

Hi Kevin

1. Your understanding of the issue is correct. And just to complete the description, the "The operation could not be completed" dialog is displayed immediately after VS displays the same "Change Source Control" dialog which you mention later in your text. The only way to exit this dialog is to press the "Work Disconnected" button - otherwise you have to tell VS the path to the VSS databases you wish to connect to and, obviously, this is impossible because I'm off the network
2. I followed your instructions to open the "Change Source Control" dialog and indeed the connection status of the VSS databases were still "Connected". So I took the "Disconnect" option and the "Connected" check boxes all cleared. I then took the "OK" option and the "Change Source Control" dialog closed... but then the "The operation could not be completed" dialog was displayed again. And I found that when I returned to the "Change Source Control" dialog the connection status of the VSS databases were still "Connected" and I could repeatedly use the "Change Source Control" dialog to change the connection status and on each occasion this failed with the same "The operation could not be completed" dialog being displayed
3. I've checked all the settings within Tools>Options>Source Control and all the settings look sensible and they're the same as my colleague's

So, in summary, no further forward but I'm grateful for your continued assistance.

Hi RMG,
I've read through the post and was wondering if you already tried pulling a
fresh copy of the project from Source Control? File=>Source Control=>Open
from Source Control, once your connected at the office. Sometimes when
things get out of sync, these steps will help. If that fails to resolve
your issue, I would suggest contacting product support for assistance in
generating a dump of this exception. We can then analyze this and hopefully
identify the cause of the error.

Chris & Kevin,

I am having the exact same problem as RMG.
I tried pulling a fresh copy from Source Control - it did not help
resolve the issue. I also performed a Re-Install of Visual Source Safe
6.0d, again with no positive result. My Source Control settings are
identical to a colleague's settings (I too have a colleague whose
Laptop functions as you would expect & hope re Working Disconnected).

Interestingly I CAN work successfully in Disconnected mode, so long as
I am connected to the VSS server when I actually change to
Disconnected mode (which requires me knowing before-hand that I need
to work offline).
I suspect RMG would be able to do the same. RMG?

Interestingly, this functionality is consistent with the on-line help
(press the Help button next to the "Work Disconnected" button),
however not that practical in a mobile, offline world.

I'm very interested in any results, resolution to this issue if anyone
has further info to post...
