Error during deployment

Hi,

I am having a problem installing an msi for a web site. The error
message I am getting is:

"The specified path 'http://mipdev05/features/Fas2' is unavailable.
The Internet Information Server might not be running or the path
exists and is redirected to another machine. Please check the status
of this virtual directory in the Internet Services Manager."

The same problem appears in the following (recent) thread:
http://groups.google.com.au/groups?h...ngxa06.phx.gbl

It seems to be referenced a lot in the newsgroups, but no-one seems to
give an adequate solution.

I have created a log for the installer, as per the above article. This
is below. It was working fine, and there are three possible actions I
took that may be related to why it no longer works. First, I ran the
policy tool, Second, I did a net stop "World Wide Web Publishing
Service" (but I have since restarted the computer, to no avail) and
Third, I installed some of my dlls in the GAC. Maybe these actions
have nothing to do with it, I don't know.

I have looked at the log, and have noticed a lot of references to
C:\... (initial line: MSI (c) (18:F4): Dir (target): Key: TARGETDIR ,
Object: C:\)
It appears that it is looking for files in the root folder, instead of
their correct location in C:\inetpub\wwwroot\...

Any ideas how I might fix this?

Thanks,
Tony

One thing I've just noticed: I added a web folder to my installer so
that I can add some files in the wwwroot/bin path. When I ran the
installer, it appears to have replaced the root folder application
name, which implies that my root folder has changed because of this
install (when that was not my intention). So if security has been
clobbered, how do I set it so that my installer can see the iis site?

Something new, which I think is related. I was just trying to install
a new website within an existing project, and it has come up with the
following message:

"The web was created successfully, but an error occurred when trying
to configure the application root for this Web. Web projects may not
operate correctly without an application root. The returned error was
: Active Directory Services can not find the web server. A possible
cause of this is an incompatibility between versions of Internet
Information Server (IIS) on the client and the server. The usual cause
for this error is creating Web projects on a Windows 2000 or newer
server from a Windows NT 4.0 client. You can manually configure the
application root using Internet Server Manager."

Now, both the server and the client are on the same windows 2000
machine, so I'm thinking that the reference to the iis root in active
directory has been clobbered. I for this error message and see what I
come up with.

Ok, I think I've figured it out - well, at least on my machine it is
now back to working (being able to create a web site from within .net
project).

Basically, when you install a website using the installer, it puts the
files in place, but when you remove the website, it seems to
deregister components that it actually needs to communicate with IIS
via Active Directory Services.

To fix this, I installed another app I had lying around that is a
actually a windows app. This appears to have repaired everything!
(Talk about bizarre)

Note that the following did not work:
(1) reinstalling .netframework
(2) repairing the .netframework
(3) resinstalling iis
(4) repairing the iis mapping after removing and reinstalling iis

The moral of the story is, best not to do this on your development
machine, or if you have to, do not allow the app to remove any of the
active directory dlls from the bin directory.

Hi Tony,

We recently had the same error installing an msi for a web.
"The specified path '' is unavailable. The Internet Information Server
might not be running or the path exists and is redirected to another
machine. Please check the status of this virtual directory in the
Internet Services Manager."

The error happened during the same WEBCA_EvaluateURLsMB action.
In the log it was specified
TARGETURL = http://SERVER2003/WebOPAC.
On the time of the installation the server (SERVER2003) was
disconnected from network and IIS wasn't able to resolve SERVER2003
name(even it is the local name of the server) to IP address.
After connecting to network we were able to install successfully.

Regards,
Michael Freidgeim.

P.S. From your log I can guess that you are still in VACC. All the
best to everyone who remember me.

We have the same error happening here. Our asp.net app
has been installed, without problems, on 2000, XP and
2003 server versions.

We only get this error:
---
Product: Microsoft Internet Explorer WebControls -- Error 1314.
The specified path '' is unavailable. The Internet Information Server
might not be running or the path exists and is redirected to another
machine. Please check the status of this virtual directory in the

when installing .net apps onto a particular Win Server 2003 machine.

The reason for this appears to be the fact that the network card
drivers failed to install. As such, 2003 couldn't connect to our
network. .NET installers built on a domain machine appear to
require a domain-connected machine to install..

MS, what is going on with this?
