Windows Service problems

2 New Member
Note:I'm using VB.NET, .NET 2.0, to write a service application. So far I've only attempted to run it on the development machine.

I'm have a couple of problems I can't quite figure out with a windows service I'm writing. The purpose of the service is to backup my Source Safe folders each night over to a machine that gets backed up each night. The 2 main problems I'm having are as follows:

1) If I set the Installer to install the service in the LocalService account context, I get 'access denied' errors when I try to copy the files. I have no problem traversing the folders, however. If I install it under the user account context, and use my username/password it copies just fine. However, the service will not be running on my machine, so I really need to get it to run under the LocalService account...right ?

2) I get a 'The event log is full' when I try to write to my event log. I've tried deleting it and recreating it, tried using .clear, but none of them seem to work. I'm not sure what to do. Note: I've only reached the bit of code that writes to the log file after installing in the user accoutn context described in problem 1) description. I"m able to delete and create the eventsource, but not write to it.

HELP!!!

Thanks
Marshall

Is there a specific process or permissions that must be granted to get a .NET (framework 1.4) Window Service to run properly on a Windows 2003 Server? I built a Windows Service to start two local programs (Putty and Pageant) located on a Win 2003 Server. The service installs but doesn't start the Putty / Pageant programs properly when using any user ID except my own. Why will it work with my User ID? I install the Windows Service on a Win...

I have created a simple service which just copies a fil to a new file with a new name on certain intervals (the service implements a timer). I have no problems installing the service and the log-entries I have created on stop() and start() in the eventlog works fine as well. However - the actual task is never executed. I catch the execution of the tick and in the finally-block I write to the eventlog as well. But only one entry is creates...

We're using a 3rd party C DLL in a project that we don't have source for. When we call the DLL from a console app everything works fine. However, when we call it from a Windows Service, the DLL doesn't work (sorry, can't be more descriptive.. no errors, but no results). We've even taken the exact Windows Service project and put code in main() to instantiate the service and call OnStart() instead of going through the service base class. ...

I am having problems using VB.Net's Management base object on a machine hosting Windows Server 2003. I am trying to set file permissions from a Windows Service. These files may be loacted on a local machine or somewhere on the network. I use the Management Base Object to set these permissions which works perfectly when the windows service is running on an XP machine. However, when the service is running on a Windows Server 2003 machine I...

Hi, We have a web service (developed in C# framework 1) that run for some time on Windows 2000. Recently we upgraded it to framework 2 and run successfully on Windows 2000 and XP. However, we cannot run it on our new Windows 2003 box. The service runs and we can even instantiate it but then it dies point to NULL login object. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ERROR(7/27/2006 2:55 PM):

All I have a database table, changes to the data within which I am interested in acting on. The approach that I'm taking is to have the database update a file every time data is updated. This process is outside my domain - I can rely on the file being updated when data changes. Within my domain is the design of a Windows service to perform the operations required when the data changes. I have not produced a Windows service before...

Hi All I would like to install the same Windows Service project on the same server under different names, one for each customer. I have been able to do it but I would like an expert opinion as to whether my solution is robust or whether there is a better way to do it. What I've been trying to do is to create a core project with different extension projects, one for each customer. I wanted to create a different Setup project for each...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
