re-pointing or redirecting a database when mysql invoked

97
Hi,

After our server 'wiped out' adversity by someone, we re-installed all the necessary mysql files.
I am trying to separate my working database folder from the mysql program folder, and I want mysql to point my working database when it is invoked instead of the installed program folder where all lib, include, bin, etc are living. Can anybody help me on this issue? Thanks!

Hi,

I am facing even more serious problem after this adversity.

My database was built in MySQL 4.1, but the version 5 was installed by admin people. Somehow mysql program is not recognizing all the tables in my db which I copied into a new folder (Window XP! by the way) from my thurm drive. It shows all the tables' name at the command "show tables" but says "xxx table does not exist" when you do select command. I know that I have data in the tables. Can anyone help me...?

Is this problem due to the new version of mysql ?

Have you done a db dump in MySQL 4? If so, the you can (e.g. using phpMyAdmin in MySQL 5) import that backup into your new database.
If not, are you still able to go to MySQL 4 and do this dump?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, but I just returned to my office.

Are you saying that I should downgrade mysql to 4 from 5 and try to open the db?

Hi Ronald,

When I realized, after our admin people wiped out my server, that I kept the database I created on my thum, I was so glad and didn't worry anything else. Now I found out that the newer version, mysql 5, cannot open the tables, I am very frustrated.

I was ignorant, not knowing that just copying those table files from my PC onto my thum was not copying my tables which contained all the data and dynamic headings. Is it true?

One of the tables has more than 70 columns and it is not easy to recreate all the tables. Can you think of any other way to recover my tables? Maybe the term, recover, is not appropriate since I had copied them onto my thum.

I am afraid I cannot be of much help here. Also, I cannot find anything in the MySQL documentation to handle this problem.

The only thing I could find was this post about importing *.frm, *.MYD, *.MYI import to MySQL table

Hope it helps you. Good luck!
