To manually delete a service:
Run Regedit or regedt32 in the WINDOWS directory.
Find the registry entry called
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services
There should be a MySQL service listed which can be deleted. Have a look at
the keys and see what files the service was using and perhaps delete them
also.
Then reboot.

I am trying to reinstall MySQL on a Win XP pro box. After
uninstalling MySQL 3.x, a 'MySQL' service is left in the
list of services. I can't figure out how to delete it, and
installation of MySQL 4.1 fails during configuration. The
old service may not be the problem, but can anyone suggest
how to get rid of it?
Thanks.
