3.23.58 log files etc.

Hello,

I'm running MySQL 3.23.58 which came with Red Hat Enterprise AS 3.0 and am
having a few problems with starting it up if I modify the /etc/my.cnf file
to try and log the SQL running etc. (apologies but I'm doing this from
memory having left my notes elsewhere). The essentials are:

Stopping and starting the database via: /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysqld [stop |
start]

Trying to write binary logs (and the others such as logging queries and slow
queries via entries in /etc/my.cnf).

Am getting errors in /var/log/mysqld* complaining about the files not being
present, therefore cannot use the files I specified in /etc/my.cnf.

I suspect this is something to do with permission, but any help is most
gratefuly received (apologies in advance for the lack of exact detail in
this posting).

Thanks,

Malcolm
