Full text indexing works with textual fields in mysql db. So these
format files have to be saved to mysql fields, and in textual format.
E.g. xls can be saved in csv format so it is searchagle. .doc would
have to be saved in .txt format. html would be fine as is.

.pdf would probably require a convertor.

Let’s also add that there are a great many tools for free-text
searching of such files, a number of them do understand many different
format files, without any conversion... so I am not sure mysql is the
solution here.

Can you please tell me which tool? I am trying to find something but
without success.
Thanks.

I don’t have personal experience with any. You may want to start in
google, and search for "text search software" (search both web and
newsgroups).
