encode question

Is there any way to detect if a field has been encoded before I decode a
field.

I am going to encrypt information in my MySQL table using encode and decode.
Like first and last name. The table is already filled with records.
So before I display client's first name I need to know if it has been
encoded,
otherwise I'll use the decode function.

One simple way of doing that, is to provide a hidden field in your
form. When encoded, this field would have a value of 1, otherwise
zero.

e.g. <input type=hidden name=’encoded’ value=1>
