amd64 mysql hang woes

Hello,

I am having this problem that is just driving me crazy..
When using Bugzilla with Mysql (all Mysql, Perl, and modules all supplied by RedHat for RHEL 3.0),
MYSQL hangs frequently.
I have finally resorted to building Perl from sources once I have given up with trying to make the RedHat supplied Perl work well (using CPAN a lot here)..
I have also downloaded the pre-built binaries for MySQL AMD-64 from the MySQL website.
Now CPAN wont build DBD::mysql because of error. Apparently, libmysqlclient.a has not been built with -fPIC, or so it complains.
Now I am building MySQL from source..

And NOW I am experiencing hangs during make test..

[root@goldorak mysql-4.0.20]# make test
cd mysql-test ; ./mysql-test-run

Has anybody gone through this pain before?
Is it me, or is there something wrong with trying to get MySQL working on a quad Opteron system?
Thanks in advance..
