New to MYSQL

I am to new MYSQL and I want learn about it.

Is MYSQL truly open source or do I have purchase certain items?

Where do I download it from?

Can MYSQL run on as a desktop application or do I need a server or can it be
both?

There are many books on MySQL, and also lots of great documentation
available for free at www.mysql.com. You might want to start here:

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/index.html

Get started by reading sections 1, 2, and 3 of their manual.

You really should read the license yourself, straight from the makers of
MySQL. As with all legal subjects, you shouldn't trust anyone's
interpretation unless they are a lawyer.

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/ is a good place to start.

Yes, you can write client applications that access MySQL databases on
the same physical computer. You don't need the server to be a separate
machine.

Happy learning:

It is open source and you can use it for example as a home server or you
can even use it as company server for free, if that is what you ask. But
if you want to make application that has MySQL source code in it, you
will need to read the license files carefully.

AFAIK you will need a server where to connect to. But you can do so that
you have a server on another machine and client on another. Normally
people download both server and client and they can use that combination
with desktop applications.
