cannot change default-character-set in Mac OS X

P: n/a
Dear All,

I am using MySQL 4.0.17-standard binary from MySQL.com.

I tried to change the default character set in the /etc/my.cnf file as
follow:

[mysqld]
default-character-set = koi8_ru

The my.cnf file only contains the above 2 lines (nothing else).

Did I do anything wrong?

After restarting the server, I use mysqladmin variables to check the
character set and the following result is shown:

| character_set | latin1
|
| character_sets | latin1 big5 czech euc_kr gb2312 gbk
latin1_de sjis tis620 ujis dec8 dos german1 hp8 koi8_ru latin2 swe7 usa7
cp1251 danish hebrew win1251 estonia hungarian koi8_ukr win1251ukr greek
win1250 croat cp1257 latin5 |
Can you help me to fix this problem?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Yours,
Bill
