New MySQL user...Mac issues

Hi,

I'm walking (or crawling) myself through learning MySQL, and it's my first time using command line in a mac. I'm having trouble even getting MySQL to run, I've followed instructions provided by MySQL and others that I've found on web, but no luck. I'm doing this:

shell> sudo mysqld_safe
password: ****
command not found
or
sudo mysql -u root

All I'm getting is
tcsh: mysql: Command not found.

The other wierd thing is sometimes it asks for a password, sometimes it doesn't. I know this is probably something really simple, so please help!!!! Maybe it wasn't installed correctly?
