mySQL threads significant jump

Don
This past weekend, my website hit a time when the only thing coming up
was the "can't connect to local mySQL server" error from PHP. When I
ran a mysqladmin -status, my threads were anywhere from 120-160. The
site uses Xoops as its CMS, therefore the homepage everyone sees loads
from mySQL. I made a couple of changes to reduce the content being seen
on the front page and my threads dropped to 4-6.

My main question to this group is: what are these threads and what would
cause so many to be used? It can't be connections because even after we
simplified the home page, we still had many users. The mySQL manual
doesn't describe well what the threads are and what would cause them to
increase.

Thanks,

Don
