Replication Overhead

All,

Is there any significant overhead immediately noticed when a running server
is switched to a master, and a slave comes online for replication? Assume
the slave has no data present.

Does this replication process utilize all resources to catch up, or is it an
integral process allowing for a continuation of current traffic?

Thanks for any and all help.
