Sorting with LIMIT

Suppose I have a table with a field of integer values, how can I select the
(x) largest values and return them so the largest value is at the bottom of
the table? A simple select with limit doesn't allow this. I don't want to
perform more than 1 query, so methods that test the number of rows returned
(y) and then do limit (y-x), -1 aren't the answer.
TIA
