can't kill mysql

I'm having so much trouble just trying to get up and running with
mysql

The latest is that I discovered now that it executes from the command
line that I can not kill the mysql process.

I'm having problems trying to get permissions to create a db. I get so
much feed back from mysql that it is difficult to guess what
specifly is my problem.

But to start I would like to be able to kill mysql or stop it
at least as root user.
