creating timestamp for data after uploading file

I'm using a PHP script to upload a file into a pretty simple database. The file that is uploaded doesn't have a date field.

Uploading the file works fine.

I've set the timestamp field using this line:

alter table avaya add column date1 timestamp default current_timestamp on update current_timestamp;
 

I'm assuming that inserting a row from a file is an update, and that it would give me the current timestamp so I can further sort the data as this dbase will be appended to daily with similar data.

The timestamp field is all zero's.

Can someone please advise?

Setting a default value in a field does not affect any data already there.
You need to UPDATE all the records.
