IBM XSeries Server + Redhat for busy MySQL DB- Opinions anyone?

We are upgrading from an overworked compaq linux box to possibly an
IBM xSeries 445 server. Running RH/MySQL3.23 (soon 4.1). Anyone
running one of these and is it any good?

The DB is busy - about 300 (up to 700) concurrent connections serving
a busy portal type site. IBM are trying to convince us to run the web
server (apache), and java server on the same box (theyre separate now)
- but we have our doubts that they can all sit together happily on the
same machine with this level of load.
Do many sites run MySQL and Apache on the same box, and is it
recommended?

Many Thanks!!
Mark
