RH9 mysql loads then unloads?

[root@localhost mysql]# ./bin/safe_mysqld &
[1] 2236
[root@localhost mysql]# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from
/usr/local/mysql/data
030930 11:28:01 mysqld ended

I can not run mysql. When I do I get the preceeding comment.
I don't know what the problem is but I read a previous issue like
this that talked about port conflicts.

installed are:
MySQL-server-4.1.0-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-client-4.1.0-0.i386.rpm

I've tried installing earliar versions always with the same
problem. I've tried installing binary versions with the same
problem.

I'm stumped..I can not get past go

I'm not sure where in the process of installation it tells me I should
be assigning user and group of /usr/local/mysql to mysql but that
appears to have been my problem. I've been making these "root".
Why as root user I couldn't get it to load is not clear to me with
user and group set to "root"

In any case mysql is not loading at boot.

So, are you able to get a mysqld daemon running?
If you can, an you just having problems running it on startup, then
you have to copy /path_to_mysql/scripts/mysql.server to
/etc/rc.d/init.d and set up start/stop links at the respective rc
levels.
