MySQL v4.0.15 on WinXP

Hi,
I'm a newbie at this so please forgive me if I'm missing something obvious.
I've installed MySQL on my WinXP machine running IIS as my server and
running PHP. After running setup.exe, I go to C:\mysql\bin and run
winmysqladmin.exe. When run initially, I get a screen telling me to enter a
username and password which I do. I'm using a username and password of my
choosing which is what I presume I'm supposed to do. Everything appears to
be running at that point. However, I then tried installing PHPMyAdmin as I'd
rather use this utility than running MySQL from a command line. I setup the
config.inc.php file as instructed using the username and password I entered
when setting up WinmySQLadmin. However, then when I go to open
http://localhost/phpmyadmin/index.php, I get 1045 error that says "Access
denied for user: myusername@localhost' (Using password: YES)' where
myusername is the username I selected for WinMySQLAdmin.
I also am denied permission for some command line requests such as if I try
creating a new user.
I hope this doesn't sound to confusing!

Thanks,
David
