blob access in c/c++

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to post a minimal snippet of c/c++
code that demonstrates how to store a blob into a table / extract it again?
(Or any pointers to tutorials covering this'd be great, too).

thanks in advance...

(p.s. if anyone has experience of heavy blob usage with MySQL, I'd be
interested to know roughly what sort of performance to expect as compared
with just saving/loading files to network drives.)
