mysql 4 not stable enough??

I asked my hosting service when they were going to update from 3.23, and was told:
Unfortunately, we are not planning to upgrade to MySQL 4.x in the near future,
because, according to our system administrators, it is not stable enough, and
it will break most of the existing customers' scripts that are already
installed on our servers. Best Regards,

Ok, we have a dedicated server, but with 12 sites on it all originally built
on 3.23. The upgrade went fine. What you might find is that the ISP in this
case doesnt want to go through the hassle? Though i can understand this for
the older site(i mean telling the users that its going to be down etc), but
are then even offering 4.x on newer boxes??

One thing you can do is goto the update history and find out what functions
etc has been changed which might affect your/others site?

Who you hosting with, just out of curiosity
