How MySql handles huge data set?????

hello every one

i have previously posted problem regarding using join on huge data set say(records upto 10 million) . but didnt get satisfactory reply.... what i found that if i use join it brings disaster .... but if i cant use joins then how to tackle situation where the output is obtained by running query on both tables... in mysql is there any solution to it....ie any alternative to joins...
any suggestions or links

How are you using the JOINs?
Are you using ON or USING to prevent cartesian JOINS.
LEFT or RIGHT JOINs are more efficient than INNER.
Avoid too many conditions in the WHERE clause,
they are better in the SELECT clause.

The proper indexing reduces the query time.

If your tables are not updated frequently, then MySQL query cache can play a useful role.
