mysql logging compiled in?

hi,

i'm trying to turn on mysql logging as follows, but it doesn't seem to
work:

mysqld --log=/root/log

the logfile never shows up after a connection or query. so i want to
know if logging support is compiled into mysql. i did not install it
and i cannot ask the hoster. does anyone know how to check that? i
don't even know where to begin.

thanks,
julia
