Possible CHAR to INT type conversion (might be PHP problem)

All,
Retrieved form value. Trying to retrieve records from dbase where "key" equals form value. Problem is (I think) that "key" is an auto-incrementing digit of type INT, and not CHAR or VARCHAR. Not to sound like a dummy, but can I have a type CHAR that auto-increments? Or, can I change the form value text to a INT type to perform the comparison?
Thanks,
JMO

Never mind. I'm a big dummy and must have used a reserved word called "key" which mysql refused to perform operations against. I renamed it and it works fine now.
