TEXT to MEDIUMTEXT conversion error

I am trying to change a TEXT field to MEDIUMTEXT. I am using phpMyAdmin
2.4.0. I get the following error. This change works on a thinly populated
test database, but not in production. Any ideas what may be wrong? Thanks.

Error
SQL-query :
ALTER TABLE `interview` CHANGE `ivu_transcript` `ivu_transcript` MEDIUMTEXT
MySQL said:

Duplicate entry '1' for key 1
