Storing Sensitive info in MySQL

I am suppose to build an application for our HR department for benefit
information. One component of benefit info is calculated off of an
employee's salary. They would like it built so they have the ability
to enter in salary info for a person through a form, and then it is
stored in a way that it can't be read by anyone using something like
MySQL-Front, or through other lookups.

Make sense? Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for getting me started in the right direction.
