Some mysql questions

Hello, I need some help with some work im going to be doing and my first
question is what is the difference with sql server or mysql, beyond the
obvious reasons such as cost of
licenses. My next question is how can mysql be backed up, and somehow have
that information be then imported at a later date. So far i have these
questions. Can you just copy the "data" folder for a backup etc. Would that
require to shut down the mysql service. Could i somehow use the into
statement to backup from a database. Is there anyways to automatically
convert inputted information to upercase ( Without having to modify all my
input boxes )
