selec using first letter

hi all,
i have this table filled with names.
Does anybody know how I can write a select statement which selects all names
starting with a certain letter in the alphabet or a strane sign like
[0...9 )(*&^%$#@!_+{}][\|?/<>,.] ???

any tips or help are most welcome!
