MySqlLAdmin trouble...cannot get past the intial login details

I am very new to the computer world and a complete neophyte to the world of MySQL. I have installed version 5.0 and the GUI admin tools. My continuing problem is this...when I try to login(for want of a better term) doing the following
Server Host: localhost( it's on my computer) and have used 127.0.0.1
Port: 3306
Username: root
Password: *********
I hit OK and I get the strangest error message...nothing like I have read about. It goes something like this.

"Administrator for MySQL Servers has encountered a problem and neds to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I have uninstalled and re-installed both programs multiple times. I have un-installed and re-installed the Apache 2 server. I have changed mirror sites.
I desperatley need to get this system up and runnning so I can start to teach myself PHP and MySQL for an upcoming job. At least so as I can hve one database functional. I have asked friends and to no avail. No-one seems to have any idea how to get around this problem I am having.

Please, if you know anything or have come across this issue I would be very grateful for your help. If possible could you explain things to me as if I know nothing...it works better that way. You can contact me either here or direct to my email at sr@creative-worksinc.com

That's a standard Windows error (looks like anyway). If you are on Windows, is it posible that you got binaries for another platform (particularly the DB)?

Thanks. What can I do about that? Is there another way to download this software and not get some other binaries? How do you all get the right stuff?

For windows, there are .msi installers. For MySQL 5.1, it's at the top of this list.
