problem querying for unicode characters

I'll make a simple example to describe my problem:

Let's say I have a table 'name' with the only field 'Name'. And it has for rows 'ā', '', 'ǎ' and ''.

When I make a query : select * from name where Name = 'a' , it is supposed to return nothing but it returned all the four rows. Why is that??

The character set is set to 'utf8' and collation to 'utf8_general_ci' already.

Thanks in advance.

Try explicitly collating or converting the search value.
