cmd1.CommandText = "insert into table_a values(" & str & ");"

i even tried replacing ' by \' But that too didnt work.

any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
for this you can try it like this,I want to know In which language your doing.
bcz string concatination isdiffer.
str=windows'xp'
cmd1.CommandText = "insert into table_a values(\"" & str & "\");"

try to use this.you have to give the quotation that to double quotes.bcz in your string you have single quote and no need to addslashes
