how to count groups in a query?

I essentially have two tables:
Table1:
id(int) name(varchar) groupid(int)

Table2:
id(int) groupname

I would like to return a recordset with two fields:
Table2.groupname
Count of Table1.groupid where Table1.groupid = Table2.id

The recordset might look like:
groupname groupcount
Group1 8
Group2 10
Group3 5

Does this make sense to anyone? I appreciate all help.
Thanks!

Hi

try with this
select t2.groupname,v.mpg from table2 t2,(select groupid gid,count(id) mpg from t1 group by groupid) v where v.gid=t2.id;

but this is not performance tuned one
