MySql 5 : last_update_id()

I can code around it for now but it would be handy to have a function
similair to last_insert_id() that returns the primary key value of the
last record updated. I've seen references in the past to it but no
comment on why it has not been implemented in MySQL (apparently, Oracle
& others support this syntax).

Any reasons why not or is this one of those time issues?
