can't connect to local mysql server through socket

i have just installed suse linux 10.0, when i run the command mysql -p, it prompts me for a password which i dont know so i press enter i get the following:

error 2002 (HY000) cant connect to local mysql server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2).

can you please help

Well, if you yourself have installed MySql on your system, you are the only one to know the password that was assigned during installation/customisation.
You even explicitely ask the server to prompt you for it (command: mysql -p).

Try uninstalling MySQL, and then reinstalling by hand. Here is a good walk through of installing and setting up MySQL yourself. I find you will get a better handle on it if you do it yourself instead of guessing what the distro installed and how they installed it.
