I want default values only

I have one table with 42 fields. When creating a new record, I would like to create 42 variables using the field names, then set the values of these variables to the default values of the fields. Is there any easy way to do this with a select statement? Thanks.

Something like this, using PHP?
$DATABASE = 'dbname';
$TABLE_NAME = 'tabname';

$result = mysql_query("SHOW FIELDS FROM $DATABASE.$TABLE_NAME");
$stmt = "";
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {
$quote = "";
if ( !is_numeric($row['Default']) )
$quote = "'";
$stmt .= "$" . $row['Field'] . "=$quote" . $row['Default'] . "$quote;";

}
eval($stmt);
Not something like that, *exactly* like that. I was unaware of the SHOW FIELDS command. Thanks!
