how to make mysql work for me?

I am currently trying to design a basic footy tipping competition. I am trying to work out how to get the database to work for me when I enter in the winning teams for each week. I was wondering if it was possible to have a code or script that goes through the database of everyone's selections, compares them with the winning teams and then allocates 2 points for every correct selection they have.
E.G. Team 1 -vs- Team 2
scenario: player_1 selects Team 1;
Team 1 wins;
--
Once I enter (as administrator of the competition) Team 1 as the winning side and submit it to the database, how can I get the database to enter a value into a field called 'points';
....Then (sorry to be a pain) that same code to assess all eight games for the week?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
****As you can all probably tell - i am new to this - sorry for the gabble*** :confused:

Easy,

When you enter the results for a game locate everyone who gave a result for that game and from them the people that got the wining side correct then for everyone on that list of people update there score for the result.

Should happen automatically as you enter the results.
