'UPDATE' in MySQL

Is there a way to replace part of a string with a wildcard - i.e...

"*lodges" with "*Lodges"

and also to be able to remove a space - i.e . .

" houses" with "houses".

??

i don't believe you can do what your wanting without doing a mass update through some sort of script.
