Mysql basic help

We have just setup an apache server with php and mysql and are trying run a php page pulling items from our table

we recieve a parse error, "unexpected '=' in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\apache2\htdocs\skittles\Skittles\skittles_sq rm0uqs40.php on line5"

when line 5 states:
$skittles = mysql_query($query_skittles, $skittles) or die (mysql_error());

or any other reccomendations or links to easy tutorials on this subject would be great
