The mysql_install_db script tries to find the print_defaults command by
relative or absolute pathnames in the following order:
./bin/my_print_defaults
./extra/my_print_defaults
/usr/bin/my_print_defaults
/usr/bin/mysql_print_defaults
my_print_defaults (search via PATH environment)
Apparently, the print_defaults file is in none of those locations.
Have you tried adding /usr/mysql/scripts to your PATH environment?
FWIW, I had no problems installing MySQL on my SuSE 9.2 system by
installing the RPM distribution I downloaded from mysql.com. The RPM
installed mysql_install_db and my_print_defaults in the /usr/bin directory.
