I'm an ASP/M$ Access programmer who is leaving the Dark Side for
PHP/MySQL. I'm used to adding, changing, deleting my Access database
locally and then FTPing it up to my website. What are the ways I can
make changes to an online MySQL database and how may I find out more
about them?
For example you could write commands in sql to a file (or dump such file
from another mysql database and then give command:
mysql -u username -p -h address.to.remote.host < sqlfile.sql
Which would execute the sql commands in the file, on the remote server.
With the same method you could create a backup of remote database.
Other ways are for example using phpmyadmin or similar graphical tool
via web browser. Or connecting to the server via ssh and then using the
mysql from commandline, you could for example send the sqldump via scp
(secure way to transfer files, you could use FTP also, but no-one should
use FTP nowadays anymore, since it's not secure) and then give similar
command as above to import the dump into database.
