Are Tracfones reliable? I've had bad experiences.

I've had two different Tracfones (the basic model) and they were both very unreliable. The first one lasted about three weeks and then it just stopped working. The second one was defective right out of the box. It never even activated and kept saying that it needed to be charged right after I just charged it the entire previous night. Is this an anomaly, or is this common with Tracfones?
