Mobile development FAQ or primer needed

Hi - I am an intermediate level web and flash developer coming from a design orientation (as opposed to computer science background) and have been developing sites and flash interactives since such things existed, but I am a total newbie as far as mobile devices are concerned.

I have been getting requests to make web projects acessible by mobile devices. I need to start learning the basics on this. I just looked at the "Intro to WML - WAP Basics" in the howtos here. Is this still accurate (I notice that these were written in '02)?

I know that mobile devices are starting to be able to browse unmodified websites and some can do flash, but don't know what the statistics are for capabilities. I need to know how people in the real world are developing for mobiles - what the best practices are, etc.

Basic info would be appreciated, or if there any sites or books that anyone can point me to, that would be great too. Thanks

The WML and WAP basics is useful for an overview but does not provide enough technical detail for the average programmer.

If you want to learn how to develop wireless content you should consider using XHTML like from this link:
