How to make my own bluetooth device?

Hi, this is probably a bit of a long shot, but I would like to make a simple bluetooth device that just has a couple of lights on it and a light sensor, which can communicate with a mobile phone (or a bluetooth-capable computer).

All I want it to be able to do is allow the phone/computer to read the light level measured by the light sensor and turn the lights on the device on and off.

Does anyone have any idea where I should start? I'm thinking that I should find an existing bluetooth device (like a headset or something) and take it apart and adapt it.

I have a good knowledge of PHP, I am currently learning Java (so not a total noob!). Any suggestions as to how I might go about creating such a thing?

Sure, first you need to get your EE degree. Then you need to get yourself a test bench. Then you can buy yourself a BT module like one of these. Then you can solder it all together and connect it via USB or UART. Then you can write the driver for it. Once you have written and tested the driver then you start building your application.

Ah, simple as pie then! /*note sarcasm*/

This is going to be one of those things where my arrogance causes me to attempt something that's well out of my depth. I'm sure I'll enjoy trying though!

I assume EE is electronic engineering? This is where my music degree lets me down!
